How to change the listening port for Remote Desktop

Always make sure you backup your registry file before you make any changes.

Follow these steps to change the Remote Desktop port:

  • Select Start and type regedit in the Type here to search box, then either click on Registry Editor or Open

NOTE: If you cannot see the Type here to search box, just start typing and it will appear

  • The User Account Control for the Registry Editor should appear, click on Yes to continue

  • Find the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber

  • Double click on PortNumber or right click on PortNumber and select Modify

  • Double click on PortNumber or right click on PortNumber and select Modify

  • Then select Decimal under Base to see the current port number (Default is 3389)

  • Type in the new port number and then click OK

  • Close the Registry Editor and restart the computer

NOTE: When you try to connect to this computer by using the Remote Desktop connection, you must type the new port. Maybe you have to set the firewall to allow the new port number before you connect to this computer by using the Remote Desktop connection.
