Delete Corrupt Windows Update Folder

On occasion Windows updates fail and refuse to install some updates which can be caused by some update files being downloaded and become corrupt.

Firstly, it is always recommended to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter with these steps

  • Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot

  • Select Windows Update under Get up and running

  • Select Run the troubleshooter

If that does not fix the issue, then follow these steps to clean out the Windows Updates download folder

  • Click on Start and then type services in the Type here to search box, then click on the Services app

NOTE: If the Type here to search box does not appear, just start typing and it will

  • In Services, find Windows Update and right click on it, then select Stop

TIP: Pressing W will get you there faster

  • Open File Explorer on the taskbar or press Windows Key + E, then go to the following folder

    C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Delete everything that is in this folder

If prompted by the Folder Access Denied box, click on Continue

  • Go back to Services, then right click again on Windows Update and click on Start

  • Close any windows dialog boxes you have open.
