Please follow the steps below on how to save an email message as a file that can be opened in Outlook and used like any other email message.

  • Open Microsoft Outlook

  • Open the email that you want to save as a file and then:

    • In Outlook 2007 – Click the Office button and then click Save As
    • In Outlook 2010/2013/2016, click File tab and select Save As
  • Then in the Save As box, select the drive and directory in which you want to store the file

  • In the File name field, type a name for the file

  • From the Save as type list, select Outlook Message Format (*.msg)

The .msg extension is automatically be appended to the filename

  • Click Save

When you double-click the file it will open in a message window in Microsoft Outlook.

You can then work with the message in Outlook just as you would if you had opened the message from your email inbox or other folder in your email client.
