Windows 10 updates stuck downloading

Last Updated on April 26, 2020 by Next Century

If Windows Updates are showing there are available updates and your computer starts downloading them but it gets stuck and stops downloading.

It might show a constant figure but there will be no progress. The figure in your case could be 0%, 23%, 33%, or any other, but every time you try to download the updates, you find that they are stuck on that particular figure, even if you leave it for a few hours.

Try the follow steps to see if this resolves your issue:

  • Click Start and then type cmd in the Type here to search box, then either right click and select, Run as administrator or click on Run as Administrator

NOTE: If the Type here to search box does not appear, just start typing and it will

  • When the User Account Control is displayed, click Yes to continue

  • Type in the following commands, one after the other and press Enter after each command

    net stop wuauserv

    net stop bits

This will stop the Windows Update related Services

  • In File Explorer , locate the folder

    C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Delete all the files and folders (Press Ctrl+A to Select All and then Delete)

NOTE: If you cannot delete the files, they could be in use. Restart the computer, run the commands above again and then try to delete the files.

  • Type in the following commands, one after the other and press Enter after each command

    net start wuauserv

    net start bits

This will start the Windows Update related Services

  • Run Windows Update again and see if this has resolved the issue
